New visit site – Namkhan Eco Farm Luang Prabang

The NamKhan Eco Farm is an operational permaculture farm, education centre and demonstration site that has an ongoing development program.
The farm is situated on a 7 ha property that fronts the NamKhan River, Luang Prabang, Laos.
Build on permaculture principles the organic farm produces a large variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and seeds that are sold to local restaurants, visitors and in the local shop.
In addition, the farm offers different kind of workshops, education and learning centers, volunteer’s activities, and housing facilities, especially for tourists.

Plan for new Tourist site: Xe Salalong Reservoir

Savannakhet province, in central Laos bordering Thailand, plans to develop Xe Salalong reservoir, in Thapangthong district, as a new tourist destination.
The Reservoir is identified to have place for a Tourist Service Centre, a Boat Marina, a Protected Nature Park, a Community Handicraft Center and a Parking area for buses and cars. The survey, organized by the Local Authorities has been settled up and outlined details for a proposed annual Boat Race Festival and Agricultural Tourism activities at Don Ngoikao — an Island Village in the Reservoir.
Once finished, the site will be an ideal stop over for overland trip from the Center to the South of Laos.

New Product in Luang Prabang: Luang Prabang Green Organic Farm.
 
Green Organic is located 40 Km from the center of Luang Prabang to the North. It is in a perfect location, beside NumPa River, with fertile soil to grow vegetables, fruit and herbs. The Green Organic farm produces vegetables without harming the precious environment and without chemical or artificial fertilizers.
 
The farm also gives an opportunity to train young local farmers in organic farm techniques, and is a centre for visiting students to learn our traditional and environmentally friendly practices.

Their main services are:
1. Day tour to Green Organic Farm:
This day tour will teach participants the complete process from agricultural preparation through to the use of organic fertilizers and organic insect spray. The tour visits other local farms to learn their traditional techniques. The tour concludes at our organic restaurant to enjoy a light, vegetarian lunch and local organic coffee in a beautiful environment.
 
2. Agriculture Class
This class will suit farmers or home gardeners. You will learn how to use organic products to prepare the soil, feed it and also plant the vegetables. We will use natural fertilizers and insect protection spray. You can choose which vegetable you wish to learn to grow.
 
3. Lao Cooking School
The cooking class begins with a short tour of our farm, to understand the ingredients used. You will learn how to prepare a traditional dish of Lao sticky rice. A second dish will be prepared, choosing fresh ingredients from the farm, to share in a meal together.
 
The Green Organic is also committed to support local communities in order to provide jobs and education for poor students from the countryside to get access to better education in the city.
 
All the charity activities are done through the House of Dreams and Bamboo School.
(House of Dream is a home away from home in Luang Prabang where economically disadvantaged but talented children from rural villages have the opportunity to get a better education and perhaps, as a result, attend university.
House of Dream was founded in 2012 by 25 year old Ken Pitsapheng. Ken was a novice monk for five years and his Buddhist temple life inspired him to start this small project.

At the Bamboo School they are raising funds to purchase school materials and equipment.

What to do in October?

October, is not only the start of high season in Laos, but also one of the busiest months which named “Month of Festival”.
Coming to Laos this Oct, tourists have many chance to join the colorful festivals throughout Laos, to take part in the traditional activities with locals, share the memories and enjoy the beauty of authentic Laos culture:

1. Naga Rocket Festival
Date: 16th October 2016
Venue: Bolikhamxay Province
The fireballs coming out from the water’s surface can be seen once a year on the last night of the Lao Buddhist Lent. The Naga Rockets can be spotted where the Nam Ngum and the Mekong river meet in Thaprabath District, Bolikhamxay Province, as well as in Pak Ngum District, 60 kilometers east of Vientiane.

2. Boun Ok Phansa and Boat Racing Festival
Date: 16th October 2016 (Boun Ok Phansa & Lhai Heua Fai, Festival of the Boats of Light)
Date: 17th October 2016 (Boat Racing Festival)
Venue: Vientiane Capital and Nationwide
Boun Ok Phansa is the last day of the Buddhist lent. It occurs on the 15th day of the 11th month of the lunar calendar. In the morning, donation and offering are made at temples around the country. In the evening, candlelight processions are held around the temples while hundreds of colourful floats decorated with flowers, incense and candles are set adrift down the rivers giving thanks to the river spirit (lai huea fai and loi ka thong). There are said to pay respect to the Buddha and to thank the mother of river for providing water for our lives as well as for blessing and to float bad luck of the past year away enabling the good luck to flow in. this colourful ritual has been carried on by Lao people for thousands of year.

3. Luang Prabang Half Marathon
Date: 23 October 2016
Venue: Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang Half Marathon or also known as the “La Procession” which is held at Luang Prabang, Laos. Experience the all-sweat out ra during the month of October. The rate comprises with 21 kilometers, 14 kilometers and 7 kilometers distances that start from the National Museum. The organization raises the event to give significance to the charities they chosen. The concerns of the runners and all other professional racers are to the people who need their help.

4. Laos Handicaft Festival
Date: 26th October – 1st November 2016
Venue: Lao-ITECC, Vientiane Capital
Handicraft Festival has been internationally recognized where the costumers and traders came from different countries around Asia and some other continents. The festival occurs during the month of November at Lao ITECC. Beyond 200 professional artists from all over the world participates on this event. The fest showcases various products including jewelries, textiles, handicrafts, souvenirs, and even agricultural and food products which includes oil, tea and coffee. The festival gives courage and appreciates the culture, traditional designs, and skills of every individual.
