Plan for a new river jetty in Vientiane

Vientiane authorities will grant permission for a local developer to build a recreational complex with a river jetty on the banks of the River Mekong that will include a small port and even an immigration checkpoint.
Lao News Agency quoted Sisattanak district governor, Phokham Sayasone, said the complex that would include river boat berths would be located in front of the Landmark Mekong Riverside Hotel in Sisattanak district of Vientiane Capital.Asia Reveal Tour - Mekong RiverThe entertainment wharf is among three major development projects in the district involving hotels, guesthouses and shopping malls.

The developer is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with relevant authorities to conduct a feasibility study on the wharf project.
It would have berths for riverboats the biggest being able to accommodate up to 300 passengers.
However, there are still many hurdles to cross before construction can begin, including dealing with opposition from groups that want to preserve the riverbank. There are already massive undertakings that built river walls and roads along the bank. Critics say they spoiled the natural beauty of the river.
There are more than 4,000 small and medium-sized enterprises in Sisattanak district and so far this year, the district has collected revenue of over USD4 million in tax related revenue.
