That Luang Festival remarks Visit Lao Year 2018

The That Luang Festival is extra special this year as it anticipates Visit Laos Year 2018, aiming to spotlight Lao culture, tourist attractions and the local  lifestyle to the eyes of the  world.
The festival is held annually with celebrations lasting for at least three days and culminating on the 15th full moon day of the 11th lunar month. This year the festival was officially observed from October 28 when Visit Laos Year 2018 also officially starts. On October 27, there was a That Luang stupa consecration ceremony, followed by various religious and traditional ceremonies from October 31 to November 3. This year’s wax castle procession will start at Vat Simeuang and proceed to That Luang temple on November 2.  A traditional game of tikhy and the final candlelight procession around the stupa will take place on November 3. The stupa is located in Thatluang-neua village, Xaysettha district. Every November, the colourful That Luang festival is staged to celebrate the stupa with people participating in traditional activities and ritual ceremonies such as the wax castle procession, almsgiving, tikhy (a traditional hockey game), and candlelight processions to venerate the stupa and honour King Xaysetthathirath.
A trade fair being held to mark the official launch of Visit Laos Year 2018 and the annual That Luang festival is putting Lao-made products centre stage.
The trade fair is taking place at two venues: Lao-ITECC, which has 460 booths displaying goods from Laos and other countries, and the That Luang esplanade where 640 stalls have been set up, including three run by foreign countries.
Pandaw launches second Mekong Boat

A new double-deck river boat, RV Sabei Pandaw, will set sail shortly on the Mekong River offering trips through Laos to Yunnan province in China.
The 45-metre vessel has been specially designed to navigate the shallow waters of the Mekong River and the navigational challenges of narrow gorges strewn with massive boulders.
The Sabei will have just twelve classic Pandaw staterooms; 8 on the main deck and 4 on upper deck as well as an open plan saloon with flexible indoor or outdoor dining.

Its owner, Pandaw River Expeditions claims the shallow draft will enable it to offer year-round cruises to and from Yunnan China passing through Laos.
The new river boat, Pandaw Sabei, will sail between Vientiane, the Laos capital and Jinghong in China, starts from 2019.
Pandaw was the first to open river expeditions in Laos in 2015 and added a second ship, last year, extending the programme from Laos to Thailand to continue to China.
New Temple Project in Xieng Khoang

Monks and Buddhist devotees are backing a new temple development project on a hilltop in Xieng Khuang province.
The project covers more than 18 hectares in Thongmixay village, Paek district. The location is about 1.5 km from the Plain of Jars, a famous megalithic archaeological site that is well known across the country. The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism has submitted an official document to the UNESCO to list it as Laos' third World Heritage Site.
When tourists visit the attractive Plain of Jars, they can view the temple because it is located atop a high hill.
The main attraction of the shrine will be the country's first ever bronze Buddha statue, which will be installed at a height of 1,227 metres above sea level.
The image of a sitting Buddha is 26 metres high and 16 metres in diameter.
The new temple is called Haihin Mixayyaram and the statue is named Pha Chao Ong Luang Pathanphone , which means the image gives blessings.
About 380 steps will be built up the hillside so that visitors can climb to the top to worship the image or to get a view of the surrounding area. A road will also be built to the top of the peak.
Once finished, the Temple would become a place of worship for Buddhists and also boost tourism in the province.
